Some still lifes begin with beautiful objects. This one began with a beautiful person.
The vessels, treasured pieces and carefully chosen details in this painting belonged to my friend Rachel. As I arranged them, I realised they were far more than simply things. Together they reflected her personality, the colours she was drawn to and the quiet beauty she surrounds herself with each day.
I've always been fascinated by the way beautiful light transforms both ordinary and extraordinary subjects. As the light moved gently across the collection, each object revealed its own texture and character while becoming part of something larger—a portrait of a life without ever painting the person herself.
Painting Rachel's Things became a reminder that the objects we live with often hold memories, tell stories and quietly reflect who we are. My hope is that this piece encourages others to notice the beauty in the everyday things that make a house feel like home.
There is something especially meaningful about this original painting, where every brushstroke and subtle shift of light reflects the time spent observing not just beautiful objects, but the life and story they quietly represent.
