From My Easel
There is something special about a table set before anyone arrives.
For Time to Gather, I was drawn to that quiet moment of anticipation - the glasses waiting, plates set down, cutlery catching the light and an abundant flowering branch stretching almost exuberantly across the scene. Nothing is happening yet, but there is a sense that soon this quiet table will be filled with conversation, food and the people we love.
Beautiful light has always made me want to paint both ordinary and extraordinary subjects, and here I loved the way it moved through the transparent glass, illuminated the white vessels and caught those soft blushes of colour within the flowers. Even the simplest objects seemed transformed by it.
Time to Gather became less about the objects on the table and more about what they represent: hospitality, connection and making room for one another.
My hope is that it brings a sense of warmth to the home where it hangs; a gentle reminder of the joy found in opening our homes, pulling up another chair and taking time to gather.
About This Composition
Time to Gather is a contemporary still life depicting a flowering branch arranged beside a softly set table of glassware, white ceramics and tableware. Warm natural light and expressive brushwork bring luminosity to the glass and flowers, while the waiting table evokes hospitality, connection and the timeless ritual of gathering together.
