From My Easel
Take Me Deeper was born from my fascination with the form and colour of the ocean at Yallingup, particularly at the end, known as ‘Rabbits’.
There is something captivating about standing on the shoreline, looking out across the water and wondering what lies beyond what we can see. For me, the sea has always been a place of both peace and perspective—a reminder of how small we are, yet how deeply connected we are to creation.
Using loose, painterly brushstrokes and a restrained palette, I wanted to capture the movement of the water without over-describing it, allowing the viewer to slow down and experience the quiet invitation of the scene. I also wanted there to be a sense of movement.
For me, the title also speaks of a longing to go deeper—to live with greater faith, wonder and attentiveness to the beauty around us.
Whether interpreted as an invitation to explore, to reflect, or simply to pause, I hope this painting offers a moment of stillness and wonder.
About This Place
Yallingup is one of Western Australia's most iconic coastal destinations, celebrated for its turquoise waters, powerful surf breaks and dramatic coastline. The ever-changing colours of the Indian Ocean, shaped by shifting light and weather, ensure that no two visits are ever quite the same.
Whether viewed from the shoreline or the surrounding coastal tracks such as the Rabbit’s lookout where this artwork took shape, the ocean has a way of drawing people in—inviting moments of adventure, reflection and quiet appreciation. Take Me Deeper is my response to that enduring connection with this remarkable place.
