From My Easel
There is something about sunflowers that instantly feels happy and nostalgic.
Rachel’s Posy began with this simple bunch sitting in a glass jar on my friend Rachel’s kitchen bench. Nothing carefully styled or overly arranged; just beautiful flowers in an everyday place, catching my eye and asking to be painted.
I loved the looseness of the sunflowers, their slightly unruly leaves and those wonderful yellow petals glowing against the softer, muted background. The clear glass jar gave me another opportunity to play with one of my favourite things to paint: light moving through glass and water.
Perhaps what I love most about this painting is its familiarity. A bunch of flowers on a kitchen bench can hold memories of homes, people and seasons of life long after the flowers themselves have gone.
Rachel’s Posy is a celebration of those ordinary moments that somehow become precious - the flowers someone picked or brought home, the kitchen benches we gather around, and the memories quietly attached to them.
And yes, definitely one for the sunflower lovers!
About This Composition
Rachel’s Posy features a cheerful arrangement of sunflowers gathered in a simple glass jar on a kitchen bench. Warm yellows contrast with fresh greens, transparent glass and a softly muted background, creating a contemporary floral still life filled with warmth and nostalgia.
Reproduced from my original oil painting, this fine art print brings a little of that everyday sunshine into the home.
