From My Easel
Sometimes I arrange a still life and the objects seem to develop personalities of their own.
Jug Disagreement began simply as a study of three very different ceramic vessels. I loved the generous rounded shape and beautiful green glaze of the largest jug, the soft creamy tones of the middle one, and the smaller, slightly wonky little jug beside them.
But once I had arranged them, I couldn't unsee it.
Two seemed to be standing together while the third had quite deliberately moved away. Had words been exchanged? Was someone refusing to apologise? I have no idea, but Jug Disagreement it became.
Beyond the humour, this painting gave me the chance to explore the things I continually return to in still life: the way beautiful light falls across ordinary objects, subtle reflections in glaze, differences in texture and shape, and the soft shadows that anchor everything in place.
I love that something as simple as three jugs can make us stop, look and perhaps even invent a little story of our own.
About This Composition
Jug Disagreement features three individually shaped ceramic jugs arranged against a soft blue-grey background. Gentle natural light reveals the differences in their glazes, forms and textures, while the space between the vessels gives this contemporary still life its playful title and character.
Reproduced from my original oil painting, this fine art print celebrates the quiet beauty and, occasional personality, of ordinary objects.
