From My Easel

Sometimes the temptation when arranging a still life is to keep adding.

Another flower. Another vessel. Something to fill the empty space.

With Restraint, I wanted to do the opposite.

Three beautiful ceramic vessels, each quite different in its shape and surface, and one simple flower for each. That was enough.

I loved exploring the subtle differences between them - the cool blue-grey of one, the speckled warmth of another and the soft turquoise glaze of the third. Against the quiet background, their imperfections and individual character could simply be noticed.

There is something I find increasingly beautiful about leaving room around things. In painting, as in life, perhaps we don't always need to fill every space.

Restraint is a little reminder that simplicity doesn't have to feel empty. Sometimes, less allows us to see more.

About This Composition

Restraint is a contemporary still life featuring three individually shaped ceramic vessels, each holding a single white flower.

A muted palette of soft greys, creams and gentle blue-green tones creates a calm, minimal composition, while the handmade character and texture of each vessel brings warmth and individuality to the piece.
