From My Easel
I love the idea that the things we surround ourselves with can quietly tell a story about who we are.
Rachel’s Things began with a collection of objects belonging to my friend Rachel; things chosen not simply because they worked together visually, but because they held something of her personality and life. Her vintage radio, sunflowers in a glass jar, a favourite candle, fabric and little treasured objects came together almost like a portrait, without needing to paint the person herself.
There was so much here that I enjoyed painting: the nostalgic shape and details of the radio, light travelling through the glass jar, the cheerfulness of the sunflowers and the wonderful contrast of textures across the old wooden surface.
Beautiful light has a way of elevating ordinary objects, but I think memory does too. Something quite unremarkable to one person can hold enormous meaning for another simply because of the person, place or season of life attached to it.
Rachel’s Things is a celebration of familiar objects we gather around ourselves and the stories they quietly carry.
About This Composition
Rachel’s Things is a contemporary still life featuring a nostalgic collection of personal objects, including a vintage radio, sunflowers in a glass jar, candle and treasured keepsakes. Painted with warm natural light and expressive detail, the composition explores the way everyday possessions can hold memories and reveal something of the people to whom they belong.
Reproduced from my original oil painting, this fine art print brings warmth, nostalgia and a wonderfully collected feel to the home.
