From My Easel

Sometimes the paintings I plan the least surprise me the most.

Dusk Dunes was painted en plein air during one of our family holidays in a sleepy little fishing village. On the way down to the beach, I paused at this sandy pathway winding through the dunes and decided there was just enough light and, hopefully just enough paint left on my palette, to capture it.

Rather than reaching for more colours, I worked with what I had. That limited palette forced me to simplify what I was seeing and concentrate on the changing tones, the warmth in the sand and dune grasses, and the last soft light stretching towards the ocean.

The result surprised me. There is a looseness and immediacy to this little painting that I don't think I could have achieved if I'd planned it too carefully. The brushstrokes hold something of that fleeting moment: paint running out, daylight disappearing and the sea waiting at the end of the path.

Dusk Dunes reminds me why I love painting outside. Sometimes having less to work with makes you notice more.

About This Place

Painted in a quiet Western Australian fishing village where our family spends holidays, Dusk Dunes follows a sandy pathway through coastal vegetation towards the ocean beyond.

Rather than capturing a grand coastal vista, this painting records one of those familiar in-between places - the well-worn path to the beach, weathered railings, dune grasses and the first glimpse of water ahead. Painted at dusk, it holds the warmth and quietness of the end of a day by the coast.
