From My Easel
Children are often very good at noticing the things we adults walk straight past.
Dune Flowers captures my daughter absorbed in the tiny succulent flowers growing amongst the dunes along Geographe Bay. While the wide expanse of water and sky stretches out behind her, her attention is completely elsewhere, down amongst the leaves and little bursts of colour at her feet.
I loved that contrast. There is this enormous, beautiful landscape before her, yet the thing worthy of her attention in that moment is something very small.
Beautiful light drew me to the scene, but it was her curiosity that made me want to paint it. The flashes of pink, orange and yellow amongst the darker coastal vegetation seemed to echo the joy of discovery, while the calm bay beyond gave the whole moment a wonderful sense of space and stillness.
Dune Flowers has become a reminder to me that beauty doesn't always announce itself. Sometimes we need to stop, bend down and look a little closer.
And perhaps children already know that better than we do.
About This Place
Geographe Bay curves along the coastline of Dunsborough in Western Australia’s Margaret River Region, with calm waters bordered by sandy beaches and pockets of coastal vegetation.
Dune Flowers captures a quieter detail of this familiar landscape—the colourful succulent flowers growing amongst the dunes near Dunn Bay. Rather than looking only towards the water, this painting celebrates the smaller natural treasures found along the shoreline and the simple pleasure of stopping to discover them.
