From My Easel

We all seem to have certain things we're drawn to again and again.

For me, it's beautiful vessels, feathers, shells, natural textures and little collected objects that somehow find their way home with me. A Few of My Favourite Things brings some of those things together in one still life.

I particularly loved painting this piece on birch wood and choosing to leave much of the timber exposed. Rather than painting a background, the grain became part of the artwork itself, adding warmth, texture and another natural element to the collection.

The deep blue vessel gave me that rich contrast I love, while the pale ceramics, feathers and shell forms allowed me to explore all those subtle shifts in whites, creams and earthy neutrals. Beautiful light quietly brings them together, catching edges and textures without taking away from their simplicity.

There isn't a grand story behind each object. They're simply the sorts of things I find beautiful and want to stop and look at a little longer.

And perhaps that's reason enough to gather a few of our favourite things around us.

About This Composition

A Few of My Favourite Things is a contemporary still life featuring a collected arrangement of feathers, ceramic vessels and natural treasures. Painted on a birch wood panel, areas of the original timber were intentionally left exposed so that the warmth and grain of the wood become part of the composition itself.

Contrasting deep blue, soft whites and earthy natural tones give the work a tactile, collected quality, celebrating both handmade objects and treasures found in nature.
