From My Easel

Sometimes it isn't the subject that changes—it's the way we choose to see it.

This painting began with an arrangement of flowers in a reflective vessel. First it was an assortment of regulars from my garden, then when I was preparing for an exhibition in Fremantle, I decided to rework it using Australian native flowers. It was the unexpected angle that captured my imagination. Looking from above revealed new shapes, overlapping leaves and reflections that would have gone unnoticed from eye level.

I'm continually fascinated by the way light and perspective work together. Beautiful light has a way of transforming even the simplest subjects, while a change in viewpoint can reveal details we never realised were there. Together, they remind me that there is often far more beauty surrounding us than we first imagine.

New Perspective is an invitation to pause, look again and discover the quiet wonder hidden within ordinary moments. Sometimes all that's needed is a little shift in perspective.

About This Composition
