From My Easel

The quality of light changes everything.

Smiths Beach is beautiful at any time of day, but it's the afternoon light that continues to draw me back. As the sun lowers, the coastline softens, the shadows lengthen and the turquoise water begins to glow against the warm limestone and sand. I also wanted to capture the beautiful reflections in the still waters of the river inlet.

I've always been fascinated by the way beautiful light transforms both ordinary and extraordinary places. It invites us to slow down, to look a little longer and to notice colours, textures and reflections that might otherwise pass us by.

This painting became less about documenting a beach and more about preserving a feeling—that peaceful moment when the day begins to slow, the air feels warmer and the landscape seems to quietly exhale. My hope is that Afternoon Light at Smiths brings a little of that calm into your own home.

About This Place

Located between Yallingup and Canal Rocks in Western Australia's Margaret River Region, Smiths Beach is renowned for its sweeping shoreline, clear turquoise water and dramatic coastal scenery. Loved by surfers, walkers and families alike, it offers a different experience with every visit as the changing light continually transforms the landscape.

Painted in Heidi Emma's signature tonal impressionist style, Afternoon Light at Smiths captures not only this iconic coastline but also the warmth, atmosphere and sense of stillness found in the late afternoon light.
